Council votes against defunding police budget, approves reforms

June 30, 2020 by SouthEtobicokeNews

Etobicoke councillor Mark Grimes was among the 16 politicians who voted against the 10% defunding of the Toronto Police Service $1.2 billion budget that was to go to community services.

Council on Monday voted 16 to eight against touching the police budget and opted for a series of reforms including the creation of a non-police response team for dealing with mental health calls and for all officers to have body-worn cameras by the start of next year.

The response team can be a life-saver and what has been sought by countless victims: including the family and friends of Ejaz Choudry, who have been protesting his death for almost a week.

Choudry, 62, who suffered from schizophrenia, was shot and killed by Peel Regional Police. The family say they had called police for a health check and did not expect Choudry to be killed  by police.

Mayor John Tory said his proposed changes, introduced last week, will reduce systemic racism within the force. He said cutting the service by an “arbitrary” number was misguided.

“It is not the right way to go about getting real change, effective change, fair change, good change,” the mayor said. “I don’t want us to be focused on a number; I want us to be focused on making change that needs to be made.”

Councillors Josh Matlow and Krystin Wong-Tam had called for a 10 per cent cut of the police budget, arguing the $150 million could be put to better use by investing in community programs.

Council heard that such a cut would mean the loss of about 1,000 officers and could take years to implement because of collective bargaining agreements with the police union.

Police say there are currently eight mobile crisis intervention teams, which include a police officer and a nurse trained in dealing with those have mental health emergencies.

Police Chief Mark Saunders say the teams do not operate 24-hours per day and are not the primary responders. They are dispatched once patrol officers have arrived and evaluated the situation.

Mental health calls make up about 30,000 of the nearly one million calls police respond to every year, or about 82 calls a day.

What’s taking place in South Etobicoke this Canada Day!

June 28, 2020 by SouthEtobicokeNews

It seems very little live entertainment will be taking place this Canada Day on Wednesday, July 1 to mark our 153 birthday.

The CN Tower will be celebrating Canada Day with an amazing  15-minute light show beginning at 10 p.m.

The fireworks can also be streamed at www.cntower.ca where you will see the beautiful lights burst across the sky. The fireworks will be accompanied with a playlist featuring music by a diverse group of Canadian artists simulcast on CHUM FM, 104.5.

Most residents can tune in and look up, and all Canadians can watch the live stream from home and sing along to a celebration in light and sound.

The Six will be going virtual with a star-studded program on Canada Day in which residents will  see over 50 artists perform, including Haviah Mighty, Gordon Lightfoot, Jully Black, Kardinal Offishall, Choir! Choir! Choir!, Ali Hassan, Cris Derksen, The Next Generation Leahy and more.

An emphasis on Toronto culture is part of the event, with some performances happening both live and pre-recorded from venues around the city like the newly renovated El Mocombo.

Spread out over three segments throughout the day, the Culture Jam portion in the afternoon will include jam sessions from different Toronto artists and highlight neighbourhoods across the city.

Tune into a morning livestream from 9 to 10 a.m. with hosts Devo Brown and Jessica Holmes, featuring socially distanced breakfast by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Executive Chef

Enjoy a special 40th anniversary rendition of O’Canada, family-friendly performances by Jully Black, The Next Generation Leahy, Classic Roots and Kim Mitchell, and learn dance moves from Keep Rockin’ You.

Canada Day 2020 livestreams will be available on July 1 beginning at 9 a.m. on YouTube.

Downloadable Celebration Kits are also available for free and include Canada-themed crafts, games, recipes, outdoor activities and more.

Due to the pandemic, city-hosted events have been cancelled and large-scale gatherings are prohibited.

Mayor John Tory is encouraging residents to decorate their porches, front doors, balconies or windows for this year’s Canada Day.

If outdoor is more your style, you are urged to take a lakefront cycle or walks along Humber Bay Parks, Col. Samuel Smith or enjoy the water at Marie Curtis Park.

Locations of area speeding ticket cams to start on July 6

June 27, 2020 by SouthEtobicokeNews

Be wary of your driving fellow South Etobicoke motorists.

Starting July 6 the City of Toronto will begin issuing speeding tickets using automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras that will mail the tickets to vehicle owners.

Mayor John Tory announced the 50 enforcement cameras will begin issuing tickets to lead-footed drivers who speed starting on July 6.

“If you ignore the clearly posted warning signs [and] speed limits, you will get a ticket for speeding in these zones,” Tory warned.

The program was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic which began in mid-March. However, over the last few months although car traffic has decreased, there has been a spike in speeding and stunt driving.

He said between March 23 and April 27, the Toronto police saw a 600 per cent increase in stunt driving. Ironically one of the worst strip in our area for racing is Horner Ave., near Sir Adam Beck Jr. School, where there has been more than 6,000 incidents, according to police statistics.

The new ASE systems were installed in community safety zones, near school zones and can rotate as the city deems necessary.

There are about 16 or more such traffic cams that will be activated in our community. Their locations include:

22 Division Constable charged in police radio theft

June 17, 2020 by SouthEtobicokeNews

An 11-year Toronto Police officer stationed at 22 Division is facing charges after an encrypted radio was allegedly stolen from the service.

Toronto Police say the radio was taken from 22 Division sometime between Sept. 12 and Oct.7, 2019.

The radio was recovered by police in May 2020.

The service’s professional standards unit has launched an investigation into the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the theft, use and recovery of the radio has not been disclosed due to an ongoing investigation. The radios were encrypted in 2015.

“There is always the potential that information may have been heard outside of the service when one of our radios are stolen,” a police spokesman said.

Const. Ronald Joseph was arrested on June 15 and charged with breach of trust and theft over $5,000.

The officer has suspended with pay and will return to Old City Hall Court on Sept. 4.

A motive hasn’t been released for the alleged theft.

Police say the radios can be used to by criminals who want to know what calls police are responding to.

Police warn of latest COVID scam against seniors

June 13, 2020 by SouthEtobicokeNews

The scams they never stop.

Toronto Police are warning of the latest COVID-19 scam targeting seniors and others that residents should know about.

Police are warning members of the community to be cautious of fraudsters who contact them online or by email or phone claiming to be medical professionals who are offering free goods.

Detectives, in a release, say scammers, who claim to be members of Public Health or the World Health Organization, are offering residents free masks, other goods, or COVID-19 updates.

The scammers try to establish contact and obtain personal banking information from the victim so they can clean out their accounts.

The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the top incidents used by criminals to try to steal or extort money from seniors and others, police say.

If you have been approached or have questions call police at 416-808-2200.

Still waiting for the long-awaited Parklawn GO Station

June 11, 2020 by SouthEtobicokeNews

It looks like the days of traffic congestion at Humber Bay Shores may continue for a while.

Some 5,000 passengers daily will travel downtown in a trip that will take less than 15-minutes on a proposed Park Lawn GO Station, says MPP Christine Hogarth.

Hogarth says the proposed station will “provide the Humber Bay Shores Community with a better, faster option to get to the downtown core in less than 15-minutes.”

The service will ‘reduce gridlock and emissions on our roads and improve the overall transit network.’

“For many years families in south Etobicoke have advocated for a rapid transit option within walking distance,” Hogarth says in an update titled Metrolinx’s Updated Initial Business Case, 2020 for a Park Lawn GO Station, that was released on June 11.

Residents of the Humber Bay Shores have long complained about rush-hour traffic congestion in the area and that it can take them an hour or more to drive to their downtown jobs. It is expected the new station will be built on the Christie lands.

The IBC is part of Ontario’s plan to deliver better public transit while delivering

significant cost savings to the taxpayers through third-party investment and ensuring

sustainable GO rail service to connect more people to jobs and housing. The release of

the business case is the next step in the development of a new GO station in the area,

which is subject to necessary agreements and approvals, which can take time.

“Park Lawn’s business case is an example of an opportunity created by our government’s commitment to pursuing innovative, modern and cost-effective transit solutions for the people and communities we serve,” says Kinga Surma, Associate Minister of Transportation.

Phil Verster, President and CEO of Metrolinx, says his agency has not made a decision on a station as they are ‘exploring’ all options.

“Exploring a new station on the Lakeshore West corridor in the Humber Bay Shores

Community, could provide a new, convenient option for existing and future GO

customers,” Verster says.

Popular craft brewer now making hand sanitizer

June 7, 2020 by SouthEtobicokeNews

One of South Etobicoke’s popular craft brewer Great Lakes Brewery is now making in-demand hand sanitizer to help curb a shortage as a result of COVID-19.

GLB’s owner Peter Bulut says the company purchased a still just when the pandemic hit Ontario and has ‘been working on perfecting it (sanitizer) ever since.’

“Hand sanitizer will be continued to be produced at GLB for the near future,” Bulut says, adding the brewery had always inspired to use its unsold beer to distil into sanitizer.

They applied and quickly received a licence from Health Canada to produce, and sell, the sought-after cleansing item.

“Turns out it was a bit tougher to produce than we first thought,” Bulut explains. “The recipe from the World Health Organizations (WHO) is relativity easy but to make the sanitizer, complete with a gel consistency, was the hard part. “

He insists another challenge was to obtain bottles and caps.

“It still seems North America is sold out so that was a huge hurdle,” the beermaker says. “Moving forward we hope to produce spirits here at GLB.”

The alcohol content of the sanitizer is 75%. Health Canada recommends 60% (minimum), but they wanted to have higher than ‘minimum standards.’

“You may or may not find the sanitizer reminiscent of spirits because that’s what it’s made from,” Bulut says. “We didn’t want to add any fragrance as some people have allergies.”

The hand sanitizer cost $8 for a 235-ml bottle or $70 for a case, which includes nine 500-ml bottles.

The 30 Queen Elizabeth Blvd. brewery has been producing craft beer for more than 30-years and is known for its seasonal ales, bottled conditional releases, year-round ales and premium lagers to their 7 Barrel and Tank Ten series of beers.

Police warning seniors of new COVID texting scam

May 22, 2020 by SouthEtobicokeNews

Just when you think you’ve heard them all.

Canadian and U.S. police are warning seniors and cell phone users of the latest text message scam that is starting to make the rounds to take advantage of COVID-19.

The Thomaston Police Department in Maine posted on Facebook a photo of the alert being sent to people in a text message, which should not be opened.

The message was sent to someone in Maine from an Indiana area code telling them they need to self-isolate because they came in contact with someone who tested positive or has shown symptoms for coronavirus.

The alert also tells you to get tested.

“If you receive a text message like the one pictured, do not click the link!” police wrote on Facebook. “It is not a message from any official agency. It is however a gateway for bad actors to find their way into your world.”

Police said it could be a phishing scam to get your personal information.

“The virus is not the only invisible enemy,” police said. “Be vigilant against all threats!”

Officers say scammers are also targeting seniors with text messages posing as U.S. and Canadian Health officials telling them they need to take a mandatory online COVID-19 test in order to receive the recently approved government stimulus payment.

Police are warning If you receive a similar text message, do not open the link because it is not from an official agency. It is a gateway for criminals to find their way into your wallet, detectives say.
